Manchester United chiefs reportedly now believe a deal for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong is growing more possible and that they could even make a breakthrough in negotiations in the coming days.
Incoming boss Erik ten Hag is keen to bring in a new midfielder this summer as he begins his Old Trafford revolution, and could even try to bring in two fresh options in the middle of the park. De Jong is thought to be top of his transfer wishlist, with the pair having worked together previously at Ajax.
It comes as United could battle bitter rivals Manchester City for the signing of Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes. And Danny Murphy has given his advice to Erik ten Hag over who he should choose as his captain next season.

De Jong transfer boost
Manchester United have been boosted in their hopes of signing Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, with club chiefs growing increasingly confident that a deal can be struck for the midfielder.
The midfielder could be available for around £68m with Barca in need of raising funds in order to pursue their own transfer targets. And while previous reports have claimed that De Jong himself is lukewarm on a move to Old Trafford, Red Devils chiefs are confident they can strike an agreement.
With Barca open to selling the midfielder, it appears United fancy their chances at persuading him to join them.

City enter Nunes race
Manchester City will reportedly rival Man United for the signature of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes.
City boss Pep Guardiola described Nunes as “one of the best players in world football” following their 5-0 Champions League win in February. And reports coming out of Portugal suggest the two Manchester clubs could go head-to-head for the £34million signing.
United are said to be ready to make a bid in the coming days, although Guardiola was “convinced” of signing Nunes as a replacement for departing Fernandinho.

Ten Hag given captaincy advice
Erik ten Hag has been told he should appoint a new signing as his Manchester United captain.
Current skipper Harry Maguire was often criticised last season following a downturn in form, while recent reports have linked David de Gea with taking the armband. Previous reports have also linked Cristiano Ronaldo with the role, although Muphy says Ten Hag should not rush into a decision.
And according to the former Liverpool player, it may be best to hand the armband to “a player he knows and trusts who he brings in”.
