Guyana, the land of many waters, is the only English speaking country in South America. Throughout the past several years, the government has been reaching out to the world, encouraging travelers to enter this naturally rich country.
However, if you are one of the tourists who has taken up the invitation, the trip will be a bit more enjoyable if you take these things into consideration.
Cash
It will be better to walk with cash and not a Credit Card or Travelers Check because these forms of payment are not widely accepted.
Exchanging Houses
There are several guarded Exchange Houses in Georgetown, the capital of the country. These places will exchange your currencies for you. Canadian and US dollars, Euro and Pound Sterling are readily accepted.
You can also enter any banks and they will happily exchange your money for you as well.
Power Outage
You may not be preparing to hear this, but it needs to be said and that is, Guyana suffers from sudden and sometimes long periods of power outage. In this case, it may be a good idea to walk with a flashlight or two and to walk with some extra money to buy a hurricane lantern.
Water Shortage
Water shortage is something that you can look out for as well. If you will be or is planning to buy bottle water, this is wonderful. However, you will need to take a shower, so bear this in mind when making accommodation for your stay.
Fruits and vegetables
The people of Guyana are called Guyanese or GT, among certain circles and using fruits and vegetables for their daily meals is the norm. There are a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to be enjoyed, therefore, you will not be easily bored with the meals.
Additionally, because of the different races of people that make up this country, you are in for a food treat.
